John 7:1–24 “Understanding Unbelief”

Main Point: Unbelief seeks self-will, while belief seeks Gods will.

I. Being a “Jesus supporter” does not make you a Christian (vv. 1–13).

John 5:18; Leviticus 23:42–43; Matthew 4:3; Matthew 4:5–6; Matthew 27:40; James 2:19, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder” Matthew 7:21–23, ““Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’” Ecclesiastes 3:1

II. True Christianity seeks God’s glory—forsaking self (vv. 14–24).

Acts 4:13; Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” John 3:3, “Unless you are born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God.” Matthew 7:21; Zechariah 7:9, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another,” Isaiah 11:3–4, “And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, 4 but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;”
