John 1:35–51 “Come and See our Sovereign Lord”

Main Point: Jesus is the Messiah who sovereignly knows all about us, chooses our identity, and saves us from our desperate condition.

I. Jesus is the Messiah who takes away sin (vv. 35–39).

Mark 2:17, “And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 12:34

II. Jesus is our Messiah to determines our identity (vv. 40–42).

Isaiah 9:6–7; Revelation 2:17, “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’” 1 John 5:4, “For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.”

III. Jesus is our Messiah who knows us entirely (vv. 43–51).

Romans 8:16–17, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” Genesis 28:12–13
