John 3:10–21 “Lifted Up”

Main Point: At the cross, Christ was lifted up to heal us of our sin if we look to Him and receive eternal life.

I. Eternal life comes by looking to Christ who became our curse for us (vv. 11–15).

John 1:11–13, “He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” Numbers 21:4–9

II. God the Father sent Jesus, who paid for our sin to give eternal life to all who receive Him (vv. 16–18).

1 John 2:2, “He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.” Genesis 22:2; 12; 15–18; Isaiah 9:6, “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;” 1 John 4:8–9, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him.”

III. Judgment comes to those who choose darkness instead of Christ (vv. 19–21).

Revelation 20:10, “and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
