John 5:31-47 “The Testimony of Jesus”

Main Point: All Scripture points to Christ so we can savor God’s glory.

I. Jesus’ testimony is revealed by the transforming work that only God can do (vv. 31–36).

Psalm 132:17; John 1:6–8

II. Jesus’ testimony is revealed by Jesus’ work and the Scriptures (vv. 37–40).

Exodus 33:11; John 10:27–28, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” Genesis 32:30; Psalm 119:11, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Jeremiah 31:33, “For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

III. Jesus’ testimony is revealed as His people prioritize God’s glory (vv. 41–47).

John 17:24, “Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.” 2 Corinthians 4:2, “But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God.”
